Gary Gottesman, MD

Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine

Dr. Gottesman is an MD graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and completed his residency in Pediatrics at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and fellowship in Medical Genetics at Washington University School of Medicine in the early-mid 1990s. He then joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at the Washington University School of Medicine in the Division of Medical Genetics, spending half of his time at the Shriners Hospitals for Children-St. Louis with his mentor, Michael P. Whyte, MD. Almost two years later, he moved to Saint Louis University School of Medicine but left there to return to the National Institutes of Health first in the National Human Genome Institute, and subsequently the National Institute. He returned to Saint Louis University Department of Pediatrics in 2003, as Director of the Division of Medical Genetics and later became Academic Chair of the Department of Physician Assistant Education in the Doisy College of Health Sciences. He left Saint Louis University to return to the Shriners Hospital in 2011, as Medical Geneticist in the Center for Metabolic Bone Disease and Molecular Research, working again with Dr. Whyte. With the closure of the research center in 2021, he returned to Washington University School of Medicine in the Departments of Pediatrics and Medicine.
