We are delighted to celebrate Dr. James G. “Doc” Avery’s well-earned promotion to Colonel in the United States Air Force. As the Chief of Aerospace Medicine at the 126th Medical Group, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, Colonel Avery oversees the health and medical readiness of the unit’s personnel and leads key aerospace medicine initiatives.
Colonel Avery began his journey with the Air National Guard in 2010 and qualified as a flight surgeon in 2014. His distinguished career includes global assignments, notable deployments to Qatar and Guam, and active participation in the COVID-19 response in Northern Illinois.
In addition to his military service, Colonel Avery has maintained a long-standing civilian medical practice at Washington University in St. Louis, particularly within our Bone Health Program. Utilizing a primary care approach, he specializes in treating patients with osteoporosis and metabolic bone diseases. Even after retiring from primary care, Colonel Avery continued his involvement in this practice, underscoring his passion and commitment to this area of medicine.
Colonel Avery’s numerous awards and honors highlight his remarkable service. His unique blend of military and medical expertise not only benefits his patients but also serves as an inspiration to his colleagues.
